Rooted in Japanese folklore, the kitsune-mochi is a human mystic who shares their life with a kitsune — a powerful fox spirit.

Contrary to the kitsune-tsuki, they embody a cooperative relationship with the fox spirit typically crafted through ritual and pact though in some instances, it is passed down within familial generations. This shared power was used for both benevolent and malevolent purposes. Some kitsune-mochi acted as shamans for their communities, offering predictions, diagnosis of illness, or as a communicator for the spirit world while others used their fox's power to attract good fortune. 

However, some used this power to cause illness, ruin crops, curse enemies, or manipulate others. A double-edged sword, this power was seen as a source of mystical assistance but also as a reason for fear or envy. Not witch, not priest but something more - a soul who walks the spirit's door.

Materials in the Original: Alcohol Marker and Gold Leaf on Bristol Paper

All prints come with an additional 1" white border and are printed on an acid-free, quality print paper with a matte finish. Prints are produced locally here in St Albans, VT.

All prints are signed, numbered, embossed and come with a Certificate of Authenticity. Full size prints of Vessel will come hand-embellished with gold leaf.
